Current Projects

APP is currently concentrating its efforts on setting up our base in Kampala, and working to improve prison life in Uganda. The list below shows the current and planned projects for Uganda 2008-2009. You can also read about our previous projects and future endeavours. We also have photos and videos.

Murchison Bay Hospital

  • APP is planning a complete refurbishment of the largest prison referral hospital in Uganda, including two new operating theatres.

University library

  • Already 12 prisoners have enrolled on correspondence courses, from literacy to degree-level, set to begin upon completion of a university library and two classrooms at Kampala Maximum Security Prison. APP hopes to find further sponsorship from UK educational institutions.

Gulu health centre

  • APP is working in conjunction with the Red Cross to build a health centre in Gulu, northern Uganda to treat prisoners, pregnant inmates, guards and the local community.

Legal aid

  • APP is recruiting lawyers from the UK and Uganda to provide legal representation for those charged with capital offences, 90% of whom would not otherwise meet their lawyer before the trial.

Psychiatry interns

  • In partnership with BasicNeeds and the Centre for Capital Punishment Studies, APP will expand last year’s psychology project into a sustainable and semi-autonomous prison service, providing counselling and psychiatric medicines for the mentally ill.

University education centre

  • APP is planning a library, computer rooms and classrooms for Luzira Upper Prison.
