World Day Against The Death Penalty

October 10, 2016, marks the 10th World Day Against the Death Penalty. African Prisons Project are proud to have seen some of our law students at the forefront of fighting against the death penalty in both Kenya and Uganda from death row itself. There are 104 countries across the world who have abolished the death penalty for all crimes, however, Kenya and Uganda retain the death penalty as a mandatory sentence for crimes including murder, treason and robbery with violence.

Kenyan court finds mandatory death sentence unconstitutional

The High Court in Kenya has ruled that the mandatory death sentence in relation to capital offence is unconstitutional.

A petition was filed by APP law student, Wilson Kinyua, and 11 other death row prisoners serving their sentences at Kamiti Maximum Security Prison, challenging conflicting sentences given to similar offences resulting in a breach of their right to be treated equally.
