Elizabeth Sivi is the Officer in Charge at Machakos Women’s Prison in Kenya and is responsible for the development of all the women in her care. Elizabeth has also taken the initiative of empowering children born within the prison walls, recognising the need for these children to be educated outside the prison environment.
Whilst it is common in Kenya for staff to live close to the prison, it’s unusual for their children to mix with those whose mothers are serving their sentence there. However, in early 2017, Elizabeth decided to create a new school where they could learn and play together.
She joined APP’s 2016 Secondment Leadership Programme and continues to build an infrastructure to educate and empower the children in Machakos Women’s Prison.
