Michael Irungu was sentenced to five years in prison after his father refused to provide the recommendation required to gain probation on his arrest.
Hearing about the work of APP, Michael joined the Prison Legal Aid Clinic, where he took part in a two-week paralegal training course. As a result, he was able to support fellow inmates with legal advice, whilst continuing to receive guidance from APP’s legal aid officers.
As a result of his involvement with the clinic, Michael was able to mitigate his case and reduce his sentence to 3 years.
Whilst he was released in March 2017, he still remains a student with UoL and is in the process of completing his LLB.
